Review : brilliant, inventive, fun...
I enjoyed Petra Haden's all - vocal rendition of "The Who Sell Out", and wondered what might be next for her. This disc answers that question: more of the same great, entertaining and beautifully rendered vocal sculptures from Petra Haden. Barring a couple of tracks with minimal instrumental accompaniment (including Bill Frisell, and her dad Charlie Haden), this movie soundtrack tour de force is otherwise all Petra. Her multi tracked vocal arrangements are startling reinterpretations of well-loved film music. Especially noteworthy are "Goldfinger" and "Psycho", but I like them all. A bonus surprise is the collection of "Petra at the Movies" photographs in the CD jacket. On my wish list: I would suggest Led Zeppelin's often-overlooked but ferocious,claustrophobic and multilayered Presence for her next all -vocal project. (It goes without saying that Haden has a gorgeous voice, and she is a highly gifted vocal arranger)
